We’ve been inundated with people asking us – “What does 20/20 vision actually mean?”
So we put the question to Optical Express’ Clinical Services Director Stephen Hannan, who explains:
“By conducting research, optometrists have basically been able to gauge the standard of vision that a person should be able to see when standing 20 feet away from an eye chart. If you have 20/20 vision, it means that when you stand 20 feet away from the chart you can see exactly the same as someone with standard vision can see.”
If your prescription is below that standard, then you will be given a figure that looks something like 20/40 or 20/100. This basically means that someone with standard vision would be able to stand 40 or 100 feet away from an eye chart and see exactly the same as you would if you were standing 20 feet away from it.
One myth that is commonly referred to is that you can’t achieve a higher standard than 20/20 vision. This IS possible and over 84% of Optical Express patients treated with an iLASIK™ laser eye surgery procedure achieve BETTER than 20/20 vision within one month post-operatively*.
The best recorded human vision was 20/8 – meaning the record holder could stand 20 feet from an eye chart and see exactly the same as someone with standard vision would at eight feet – although 20/10 or 20/15 are more commonly found.
Over 68% of the UK population have a prescription of some degree and need a corrective solution to help them see better – over 90% of whom are suitable candidates for corrective surgery. The popularity of laser eye surgery to correct vision problems continues to soar as over 20 million people worldwide have now had a laser eye surgery procedure.
We recently conducted a survey into ‘The State of the Nations Eyes’ which revealed that 65.4% of people were tired of their glasses and contact lenses, while it also highlighted that laser eye surgery is the most cost-effective way to correct sight in the long term – saving consumers almost £13,500 over a lifetime.
We have invested over £1 million in each of our clinics worldwide, ensuring our surgeons have access to the most advanced technological innovations in laser eye surgery. Your vision is one of the most important senses that you have and we believe you deserve the highest standard of vision.
