Over 500 procedures have been carried out on professional members of the optical sector thanks to a unique campaign aimed at changing perceptions of laser eye surgery within the industry.
Earlier this year market leader Optical Express pledged to treat those working within eye care in the UK at no cost as part of its commitment to promoting the life-changing benefits of the procedure, providing they meet the eligibility parameters and had the procedure carried out in 2013.
Of those that have enquired about taking up the offer the majority (64%) are currently employed as an optometrist.
The majority are under 30 years of age – a key target demographic of the campaign – and employees of other optical brands.
The success of the initiative has led to Optical Express extending the offer to all student, trainee and qualified optometrists, dispensing opticians and ophthalmologists working in Ireland.
Dr Steve Schallhorn, Chief Medical Director and Chairman of the Optical Express International Medical Advisory Board, said, “The initial response to the free laser eye surgery offer from the professionals within our industry has been fantastic. Enquiries from optical students and qualified optical staff across the UK has exceeded our expectations and the number of new potential patients continues to grow as word spreads. We are delighted to now be able to extend the offer to Ireland.
“A large percentage of those booking consultations are staff members from independents, regional groups and other national optical chains, which is great as it shows there is a desire among those working in the sector to find out more about laser eye surgery, even if it is not a service that their employer offers. This offer is about informing and educating the industry itself, as there are still too many unfounded myths about laser eye surgery out there.
“At Optical Express we believe that if more people training to become optometrists or qualified and working in the ophthalmic field have enjoyed the exceptional life changing benefits that laser eye surgery offers, it will help everyone understand how this can impact all of their patients, friends and families lives.”
