Astigmatism is where the lens system in the eye is shaped more like a rugby ball than a football. Small amounts of astigmatism are generally best corrected with spectacles but greater amounts could be successfully corrected with toric contact lenses or with refractive surgery. Correcting astigmatism with contact lenses can sometimes take a couple of lens fitting trials before achieving stable and comfortable vision but it is worthwhile trying because newer lens designs offer more options than even just a few years ago.
With Laser Eye surgery up to 6 dioptres of astigmatism can be treated. Intraocular lens treatments can further expand upon this range.
