What is myopia (short-sightedness)?

Myopia affects about 15% of the UK and Irish population and is best thought of as being where the eyeball is larger than average so that the cornea brings light to a focus before it reaches the retina. Myopia often develops in early teenage years and can develop as the eye grows through to adulthood. For many people the development of myopia stabilises around their early-to-mid-20s when physical maturity is reached. Myopia is corrected with ‘minus’ powered spectacle or contact lenses. Laser Eye Surgery is a procedure undertaken to overcome short sightedness in patients aged 18 years or over.
