What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is not a refractive error like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism but is a physiological change that happens to the lens inside the eye as we age. In childhood the lens inside the eye is very elastic and easily changes shape to allow us to see near tasks clearly, like reading a book. As we age and become less young the lens becomes less pliable and cannot focus easily for most of us by our mid-40s. This is when reading spectacles become helpful. The lens continues to stiffen through our 50s and 60s so the reading spectacles need to be strengthened every 2-3 years. Presbyopia comes from Greek words that mean ‘old eye’. Forms of eye surgery such as Natural Lens Replacement with an Intraocular Lens implant can overcome the effect of presbyopia.
