Everything you need to know about macular degeneration

Macular degeneration, also known as Age Related Macular Degeneration, is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 55. It can cause a blurry or empty area in the middle of your vision over time. Your side vision is not normally affected.

Gradually occurring poor vision can make tasks like driving a car or reading a newspaper difficult. Early treatment can help symptoms to be managed and stop your sight from getting worse.

Macular degeneration happens when the part of the eye responsible for central vision and seeing colour and detail (the macula) deteriorates. This is commonly because of age but can be because of a growth in blood vessels under the macula.
