What is laser eye surgery?

It's simple.

Laser eye surgery corrects poor vision, giving you freedom from glasses and contact lenses, so you can live your life to the full.

It's a simple procedure that takes anything from a matter of seconds to just a few minutes, depending upon the level of correction that's required, but you'll notice an improvement in your vision after laser eye surgery which is truly remarkable.

A cool beam advanced laser makes subtle adjustments to the shape of the surface of your eye (the cornea), correcting its tiny imperfections and making your vision clearer and sharper. The vast majority of our patients are amazed at how quickly they recover and the speed at which they can enjoy a life free from glasses and contact lenses.

It's a wonderful world. We can help you see it that way.

Is there more than one type of laser eye surgery?

Yes, the two best-known and most popular types of laser eye surgery in Ireland are LASIK and LASEK (also referred to as PRK). Both types can be enhanced by iDesign, a highly advanced innovation which takes over 1,200 measurements from your eye to create a personalised ‘map'. This allows your treatment to be tailored specifically to you to achieve the best results.

Eye Close to Machine

LASIK is our most popular type of laser eye surgery and offers benefits including a fast recovery and excellent visual outcomes.

LASEK is an alternative treatment to LASIK and is effective for some of those patients who aren't suitable for LASIK surgery.

What is LASEK?

iDesign is an innovative system which produces a highly detailed 3D map of the eye and enhances your treatment to achieve the best possible results.

How is laser eye surgery performed?

We use the most technologically-advanced lasers to subtly reshape your cornea, transforming your vision and giving you the joy of clearer and sharper sight.

Step 1

The procedure begins with anaesthetic eye drops being applied, which quickly numb the eye.

Step 2

The laser works in a matter of seconds, sending pulses of laser beams onto your cornea to reshape any imperfections.

Step 3

Most patients experience improved vision within a few days, though full recovery can take up to a week. It depends upon a range of factors, including the speed at which you naturally heal.

The lasers we use for laser eye surgery

Our expert surgeons use the same technology that led NASA to approve laser eye surgery for its astronauts.

More than €400 million has been invested in state-of-the-art technologies. We use the most advanced femtosecond and excimer lasers, which are incredibly precise and accurate, so that we can provide our patients with the very best results.

Aftercare & recovery

Our complete aftercare programme starts on the day of your laser eye surgery and is customised to your individual requirements. We check your progress regularly to make sure that your recovery is progressing just as it should. All Optical Express patients also have access to our out-of-hours medical helpline, where a specialist optometrist or surgeon can give you professional advice and help to answer questions on vision or eye health after laser eye surgery.

How much does laser eye surgery cost in Ireland?

From €895 per eye 0% APR for 10 months

Every patient's eyes are unique and their laser eye surgery is too. A consultation with us is required first of all, so that we can determine the requirements for your treatment. That's why we provide you with a cost once you've had your consultation.

However, technological advances in recent years have made this truly remarkable vision transformation affordable for almost everyone who is eligible for treatment. It's also worth bearing in mind that vision correction could be the most economical option for you over time, because it removes the ongoing costs of glasses or contact lenses.
