The myth of not needing an eye test if you have perfect vision

There’s a myth that because you can see perfectly without the use of glasses or contact lenses, that there’s no reason for you to have an eye test.

It’s a myth because, although an eye examination will assess your vision, it can also detect a wide range of problems related to your general health.

An eye test is key in helping to identify early signs of disease, such as glaucoma and cataracts, as well as a number of other eye and general health conditions:

  • Diabetic retinopathy – poorly controlled diabetes (blood sugar levels) can cause damage to the blood vessels in your eyes and, if left untreated, can lead to blindness
  • Hypertensive retinopathy - raised blood pressure and signs of heart disease can be visible in your eyes and should be monitored for screening purposes.
  • Macular degeneration – this condition is the leading cause of blindness.
  • Keratoconus - This condition changes the shape of your eye's outer window, but it can be identified by keratometry and pentacam instruments during an eye test.

Early diagnosis of the above conditions can be essential in preventing or delaying more serious damage.

Every patient who has a full eye test or pre-operative refractive surgery consultation at Optical Express receives a personal iScan report. This report includes details of the health, prescription, and diagnostics of each of your eyes.

Whilst your iScan report after your first eye test with us includes valuable information it is where there is a record of repeat tests undertaken by us that its value to our clinicians and to you is most readily appreciated.
