Your Optical Express Consultation

What to Expect and How to Prepare

Booking a consultation is the first real step towards understanding what clearer, more independent vision could look like for you. Whether you have been considering laser eye surgery for years or have only recently started exploring your options, the purpose of your Optical Express consultation is not simply to determine whether you can have treatment. It is to understand your eyes, your health, your lifestyle and your visual expectations, and then determine the most appropriate Clinical Management Plan for you. At the consultation, many patients elect to schedule their vision correction procedure, so it's best to attend with a clear understanding, if suitable, as to when you wish surgery to take place.

Optical Express has more than 36 years of specialist eye care experience and is the UK and Ireland's No.1 provider of vision correction. Every week, we perform more than 60% of all premium vision correction procedures across the UK and Ireland. But experience and scale are only part of the story. Our approach is deliberately centred on careful patient selection, detailed diagnostics and personalised clinical recommendations.

Dr Stephen Hannan, Group Clinical Services Director, Optical Express, said:

"A successful consultation starts with the patient, not the procedure. Our responsibility is to understand what the patient wants to achieve, comprehensively assess their eyes and then recommend the Clinical Management Plan that we believe will provide the best balance of vision, safety and long-term satisfaction."

Before You Arrive: Your Health and Lifestyle Questionnaire

Before your consultation, you will be asked to complete a Health and Lifestyle Questionnaire. Take your time with it and provide as much accurate information as possible. It helps your clinical team understand your general and ocular health, medications, previous eye care, current method of vision correction and, importantly, your lifestyle and motivations for considering vision correction. That information matters because no two patients — and no two pairs of eyes — are identical.

Your occupation, hobbies, driving requirements, use of digital devices, sport and expectations of your vision can all be relevant when considering which treatment, if any, is most appropriate. As Dr Hannan explains:

"The question isn't simply, 'Are you suitable for eye surgery?' It is, 'What is the right treatment for your eyes and your visual needs?' Sometimes there may be more than one option. Sometimes the safest recommendation is not to operate at all. That clinical judgement is an extremely important part of the consultation."

This is consistent with Optical Express's industry-leading approach to safety: strict and conservative patient selection, with only suitable patients proceeding to treatment. Since 2002, Optical Express have declined patients vision correction surgery on over 1.1 million occasions, testament to their strong governance.

Who You'll Meet

Your consultation is led clinically by an experienced Optical Express optometrist, supported by a patient advisor. Your optometrist will undertake and interpret the relevant clinical examinations, review your ocular and general health information and determine your potential suitability for the different forms of vision correction available.

Your patient advisor supports you throughout the consultation, helping explain the patient journey and practical aspects of proceeding with treatment.

Most importantly, the process is designed to give you the information you need to make an informed decision. For laser eye surgery patients who elect to proceed following their initial consultation, there is also a further clinician discussion with the surgeon before surgery. The surgeon reconfirms suitability, discusses the recommended procedure, benefits, potential risks, range of possible outcomes and alternatives, and answers the patient's questions. The final decision regarding treatment rests with your surgeon in conjunction with you, based on your clinical suitability and individual visual needs.

A Detailed Assessment of Your Eyes

Your Optical Express consultation involves considerably more than reading letters from an eye chart. A series of sophisticated diagnostic measurements builds a detailed picture of your eyes and vision. These measurements help your optometrist assess eye health, identify potential risk factors and determine which forms of vision correction may be appropriate.

Your Prescription and Vision
Your vision and prescription are carefully measured to establish how your eyes currently focus and the correction required. We consider not simply how clearly you can see on a conventional vision chart, but how your visual requirements relate to your everyday life.

Corneal Shape and Thickness
For patients potentially suitable for laser eye surgery, detailed assessment of the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye — is particularly important. Advanced technology can measure its shape, curvature, thickness and elevation, creating highly detailed three-dimensional information about the front of the eye. These measurements help clinicians screen for conditions and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Eye Pressure and Eye Health
Your assessment also considers the health of your eyes, including measurement of intraocular pressure where clinically appropriate. The purpose isn't simply to establish whether vision correction is possible. We want to identify anything that may affect your eyes now or influence the recommendation we make for their future.

Retinal and Internal Eye Assessment
The structures inside and at the back of your eyes are also assessed using appropriate diagnostic technology. These examinations provide important information about ocular health and can identify findings that require further investigation or which may influence whether surgery is recommended.

Technology That Allows Us to Understand Your Eyes in Extraordinary Detail

More than £600 million has been invested in clinics and advanced technology across Optical Express. That investment matters from the very beginning of the patient journey. Modern diagnostic technology can capture information far beyond a conventional glasses or contact lens prescription, mapping each eye's individual optical characteristics to support highly personalised treatment.

Optical Express uses advanced technologies including the Oculus Pentacam and Zeiss Clarus Wide Angle Fundus Camera, alongside sophisticated laser platforms that can correct eye prescriptions in a matter of seconds.

Dr Hannan explains:

"The quality of the recommendation is dependent on the quality of the information available to the clinician. Modern diagnostic technology gives us an extraordinary amount of information about an individual eye. We combine that technology with the experience and clinical judgement of our optometrists and ophthalmic surgeons."

Reviewing Your Results and Building Your Clinical Management Plan

Once your assessment has been completed, your optometrist brings the information together. Your prescription, age, corneal measurements, ocular health, general health, lifestyle, occupation and expectations all contribute to the clinical recommendation.

Depending on your individual circumstances, this might include laser eye surgery, lens replacement surgery or another approach. There may be more than one potentially suitable option. Equally importantly, surgery will not be recommended simply because a patient wants it. Every patient is treated as an individual, with personalised treatment aimed at achieving their best possible result.

Dr Hannan said:

"One of the most important decisions we make clinically is sometimes the decision not to treat. Patient safety and the appropriateness of the Clinical Management Plan must always come first. The objective isn't to perform surgery; the objective is to achieve the right outcome for that individual patient."

Understanding Your Options

If treatment is recommended, your optometrist will explain why and discuss the options considered appropriate for you. For laser patients, increasingly sophisticated technology means treatment can potentially be personalised beyond simply correcting the conventional glasses prescription. For example, wavefront-guided treatment can take account of subtle optical imperfections that may influence visual quality, including in low-light conditions. Whether this is appropriate depends upon the patient's diagnostic results and individual visual needs.

The important principle is that technology follows the clinical assessment — not the other way around.

Making an Informed Decision

Vision correction surgery is elective surgery. You should understand what has been recommended, why it has been recommended, its potential benefits and risks, the realistic range of outcomes and the alternatives available to you. Before laser surgery, the clinician discussion covers the health and wellbeing benefits, potential risks, range of outcomes and alternative vision correction options. There is no requirement to make a decision before you feel sufficiently informed.

Many patients do decide to book their procedure following their consultation. If you think you may wish to proceed, it can therefore be useful to have an idea of suitable dates so the team can discuss availability with you. But the clinical recommendation always comes first.

Dr Hannan said:

"Good informed consent isn't a signature on a form. It is a process. Patients should understand what we're recommending, why we're recommending it, what they can realistically expect and what the alternatives are. Only then can they make a properly informed choice."

Bring Someone With You

You are very welcome to bring a friend, partner or family member to your consultation. For some patients it is helpful to have someone else listening to the discussion, particularly when a lot of new information is being considered. Depending upon the examinations required, dilating eye drops may also be used. These can temporarily blur vision and make you more sensitive to light, so if you are advised that dilation will form part of your assessment, alternative transport should be considered.

Questions Worth Asking

Your consultation is your opportunity to understand your eyes and your options. Questions you may want to consider include:

  • Which treatment would you recommend for my eyes, and why?
  • What outcome can I realistically expect?
  • Are there particular risks relevant to my eyes or prescription?
  • What will my vision be like during recovery?
  • When should I expect to return to work, driving, sport and other normal activities?
  • What happens if my vision changes in the future?
  • What aftercare will I receive?
  • Who makes the final decision about whether I am suitable for surgery?

There is no such thing as an unimportant question when it comes to your eyes. If the question matters to you, it matters to us.

Clinical Governance Beyond the Consultation

One of the features that distinguishes Optical Express is its International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB). The IMAB includes internationally respected pioneers, innovators and world leaders in ophthalmology and provides ongoing scrutiny and guidance on Optical Express clinical practice, patient outcomes, patient care and advances in technology. Dr Stephen Hannan is himself a member of the Optical Express IMAB.

This means the clinical protocols underpinning an individual patient's journey are informed not only by the experience of Optical Express clinicians, but by continuing review at an international expert level.
